HOTCHKISS NATIONAL FISH HATCHERY

Did you ever wonder where all those fish come from that are used to stock lakes, streams, and reservoirs?

Hotchkiss National Fish HatcheryThen visit the Hotchkiss National Fish Hatchery located one mile south of Lazear on the north bank of the North Fork of the Gunnison River. Established in 1967, the hatchery is part of a system of nearly 65 federal hatcheries operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service nationwide.

Each year it produces about 2.5 million trout ranging from 2 to 9 inches in length, which are then distributed throughout western Colorado. Open every day of the year, the hatchery provides a fascinating side trip to learn about raising and stocking fish. The visitor center, open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., offers dioramas, fish models, and other educational materials. The fish in the raceway can be observed during daylight hours. The hatchery consists of a hatchery building with a tank room, residences, 32 outdoor concrete raceways, 24 nursery tanks, and 6 earthen ponds. Located on 58 acres, the hatcheries cold, clean water supply comes from the adjacent Tommy Dowell Spring, which has a constant water temperature of 58 degrees. Flows range from 2,200 to 5,00 gallons per minute. Those conditions are perfect for raising trout. For more information, call (970) 872-3170, or visit http://www.fws.gov/hotchkiss/
